Finance Minister Grant Robertson has scheduled crisis meetings with unions this week after failing to communicate his public pay freeze properly.
He s bringing along the big guns - Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been called in to help calm the waters. But Robertson is refusing to apologise for the undue distress he has caused.
This is not, as has been reported, a pay freeze, Robertson said in his pre-Budget speech on Monday in Auckland. ....

For the first time, the Government s drug-buying agency has released figures about its options for investment list - medicines Pharmac would pay for if it had the budget.
There are currently 73 medicines on the list. The cost of funding every drug on the wish list is more than $400 million a year - $417,670,000.

Newshub can reveal the Government has been buying up hundreds of houses to turn into state homes, directly competing with first-home buyers in our cooked housing market.
Since 2017, the Government has bought - rather than built - 1054 houses. Analysis by Newshub shows nearly a quarter of them were affordable homes, the type of houses the Government has been giving away free cash to get first-home buyers into.

Newshub can reveal the Government s big move to give first-home buyers more money towards house deposits may not work.
The Government increased the price caps for properties based on the average house price at the lower end of the market. But in the vast majority of our major centres, the price caps are still not high enough.
First-home buyers can get $5000 free from the Government to buy an existing home if they earn under $95,000 a year. A couple can get $5000 each if they collectively earn under $150,000. The grants are higher if you re building a new house. ....
