According to Cambria County coroner Jeff Lees, a Somerset man suffered fatal injuries Saturday after being crushed by a tree in a logging accident.
Lees identified the victim as 54-year-old Joel Friedline.
Lees says Friedline was cutting trees on a family farm, located along Walnutdale Road in Jenner Township, around 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon, when a large tree, approximately 100 feet tall and 18 inches in diameter, fell and landed on him.
Lees says Friedline was flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center where he later died in the emergency room, at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Lees has ruled his cause of death as crushing injuries as a result of blunt force trauma, and his death has been determined to be accidental. ....

Commissioners sending more than $1M to Somerset County small businesses

For the commissioners, Tuesdayâs announcement is an opportunity to bolster the local economy.
âIt was eye-opening to see those applications and to see where the need was the greatest,â Commissioner Gerald Walker said. âWe hope this will allow them to keep operating.â
The businesses include tattoo shops, tanning salons and masons, among a long list of other trades. More than 275 businesses submitted applications, according to a press release on the program from the commissioners.
Grants range between $1,000 and $25,000. Amounts were determined by the amount of pandemic-related loss at the business, Commissioner Colleen Dawson said. The county worked with nonprofit The Progress Fund, of Greensburg, to administer the program. ....
