This week on the “First Opinion Podcast,” I’m joined by Corey Feist and Wendy Dean to talk about the toll that practicing medicine can take on a health care worker’s mental health, and how the pandemic has made this worse.
Feist co-wrote an essay on legislation supporting physician mental health with his wife, Jennifer Breen Feist, the sister of Lorna Breen, a New York City emergency physician who died by suicide in April 2020 after contracting Covid-19 and then returning to work. ROANOKE, Va – A Virginia lawmaker is pushing for an increase in funding for mental health resources for healthcare workers.
“The thing that’s been so crushing about this experience to our family is that she did not have mental health challenges, she didn’t struggle with depression or anxiety,” Lorna’s sister Jennifer Breen Feist said.
Thousands of frontline workers have been struggling with mental health during the coronavirus pandemic.
Sen. Tim Kaine introduced the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act in hopes of providing immediate and long-term solutions for them. ....

Kaine Reintroduces Breen Act For Mental Health In Healthcare

Sen. Tim Kaine is reintroducing a bipartisan measure named after Dr. Lorna Breen, a New York City emergency room director who died by suicide in April last year. Breen was spending time with family in Charlottesville after a round-the-clock schedule responding to the pandemic.
The proposal already has some funding laid out in the Senate’s COVID relief bill, which Kaine says he expects to pass this week.
Emily Boucher, a nurse from Abingdon, Va., spoke at a press conference with Kaine earlier today. She said  providing and maintaining help is necessary, because healthcare burnout isn’t going to end. ....

RICHMOND, Va., — Virginia’s healthcare workers have witnessed firsthand the atrocities and hardships faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
About a dozen frontline workers across the Commonwealth opened up to Sen. Tim Kaine (D - Virginia) during a virtual discussion on Monday.
“We got to pay attention to the mental health needs of our medical workers,” Sen. Kaine said. “Long after the pandemic is over the mental health consequence is going to go on for a very long time.” ....
