Figures obtained by The Courier-Mail show that on May 19, 282 of the 306 beds were taken - with the West Moreland Youth Detention Centre at capacity. In June 2018, the capacity at youth detention centres was 230. Criminologist and former detective Terry Goldsworthy told The Courier-Mail he expected things would only get worse with more stringent bail conditions put on young offenders following the deaths of expectant parents Kate Leadbetter and Matthew Field and Townsville woman Jennifer Board. ....

Christopher Hughes, 26, has spent the past three months behind bars on remand since he was arrested and charged with murder earlier this year.
