Defamation Lawsuit Against Former Fast And Furious USAG Shutdown By Court Of Appeals


An attorney with the Phoenix law firm of Ballard Spahr will not stand trial for defamation because the subject of the contested comments waited about six weeks too long to file a lawsuit, the Arizona Court of Appeals ruled Thursday.
Jeffrey Peterson sued Dennis K. Burke for defamation in Maricopa County Superior Court in May 2020 based on allegations contained in an April 2019 securities fraud complaint filed by a group of investors against Peterson and others. The Investors’ Complaint was amended in May 2020.
Court records show Burke was identified in both complaints as the source of the investors’ misconduct allegations against Peterson. ....

State sends $250M to San Diego for citywide projects, Ocean Beach Pier and homelessness


SAN DIEGO   
San Diego is expected to receive more than $259.4 million from the state’s recently approved $262.6 billion budget to fund projects and programs throughout the city.
The funding will pay for everything from renovations to aging city infrastructure to expanding homelessness programs to repairing the Ocean Beach Pier to funding new developments in science and education.
“These are dollars . are going to help us tackle some of our short-term challenges resulting from the pandemic and our economic downturn, as well as our long-standing challenges that we have wanted to tackle here in San Diego,” said Mayor Todd Gloria.
San Diego’s elected officials joined Gloria Wednesday morning at the entrance of the Ocean Beach pier, which secured $8.4 million from the state for repairs. That would be enough money for immediate repairs, but it amounts to a fraction of the estimated costs of long-term improvements or replacement of the pier, which a consult ....

Witness in lawsuit against San Diego recants, says she was bullied into signing untrue declaration

A wrongful termination lawsuit brought by a former supervisor in the San Diego City Attorney’s Office took an unexpected turn Thursday, when the plaintiff publicly released a recording by a key witness saying she was lied to, bullied and forced to sign an untrue declaration by lawyers on the city’s defense team.
A 20-minute audio file was distributed by email Thursday morning to the entire City Council, City Attorney Mara Elliott and the private law firm she hired to defend the city in the civil case, Burke Williams Sorensen. The person who recorded the tape is Kathryn McGhee, a local woman who previously dated a lawyer in the City Attorney’s Office named Mark Skeels. ....
