Salazar Elementary receives new playground, trees and mural as part of ‘Cool School’ program
Six schools in Dallas received outdoor upgrades including a new playground, loop trail, outdoor classroom, art mural and up to 100 newly planted trees.

Oak Cliff’s Salazar Elementary is one of six Dallas schools that has received outdoor upgrades.
As part of its Cool Schools program, Texas Trees Foundation partnered with Dallas ISD, Dallas Parks and Recreation and other organizations to build new community outdoor spaces at six elementary schools located in the nonprofit’s designated Cool School neighborhoods. ....

Throughout the pandemic, she helped provide communities in District 2 with millions of masks, books and supplies for thousands of students, as well as over a million fresh produce boxes and meals.
Last summer, after a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd, Cortez marched for social change, budget reform and a more equitable public safety model.
When it comes to environmental issues like Shingle Mountain, she said the city needs to make zoning work for its communities. Part of that starts with ensuring residents know what developments are being proposed in and around their neighborhoods. ....

DALLAS The jury in the Derek Chauvin trial found the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. The reverberations of the verdict were felt across the globe and reached North Texas.
There was elation and relief as the news spread. Some activists and organizers were on pins and needles as the verdict came down.  ....

Local advocates say the guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial is only the beginning. They plan to continue to push for legislation, fundamental changes in policing and more accountability among law enforcement in North Texas and around the nation.
