Print article JUNEAU A small group of Alaska state legislators, staff and invited guests held an after-hours event in the Capitol complex’s gymnasium last week despite COVID precautions that have closed the complex to the general public. The event prompted Jessica Geary, head of the nonpartisan agency that runs the Capitol complex, to write an email reminding lawmakers that “legislative buildings are closed to the public and there is nobody authorized to be in legislative facilities that hasn’t gone through the legislature’s COVID-19 testing and screening protocols.” A COVID-19 outbreak among legislators and staff disrupted Capitol business earlier this year. Many legislators and staff have been vaccinated since then. ....
Print article JUNEAU A dispute over anti-COVID policy in the Alaska Senate appeared to reach resolution Monday, but another arose in the state House on the same day that two more people tested positive for COVID-19 in the Alaska State Capitol. Sen. Lora Reinbold, R-Eagle River, wore a CDC-compliant facemask Monday in the Capitol, ending a weeklong dispute that saw her removed from committee hearings and told to leave the floor of the Alaska Senate. Reinbold had previously declined to provide proof of a negative COVID test and wear a mask that follows the Capitol’s rules. “What you’re seeing this morning is the Senate organization is 100% compliant on following the rules of the COVID-19 mitigation policy,” said Senate President Peter Micciche, R-Soldotna, as he left the Senate chambers next to Reinbold. ....

Alaska tribal health consortium provides vaccines for state Capitol Published March 5 Rep. Print article JUNEAU Five people have tested positive for COVID-19 within the Alaska Capitol since Wednesday and 20 have been quarantined, but Alaska lawmakers on Monday said they intend for the Legislature to continue its work on schedule. Tok Republican Rep. Mike Cronk tested positive last week, and two of Cronk’s aides tested positive on Sunday. Two additional positive cases have also been reported, one identified Monday morning and another over the weekend, according to Jessica Geary, executive director of the Legislative Affairs Agency, the nonpartisan organization that operates the Capitol complex on behalf of the Legislature. Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy also tested positive on Wednesday. ....
