Lamesa mourns fallen Concho County deputy who was raised on the South Plains

Friends, family and fellow law enforcement officers from around the area gathered at Lamesa s First Baptist Church Monday afternoon to celebrate the life of Concho County Deputy Samuel Leonard.
Leonard and Concho County Sheriff s Sgt. Stephen Jones died in the line of duty after they were dispatched the evening of May 10 to the 100 block of Bryan Street in Eden for what began as a dog complaint but quickly escalated into a confrontation with a neighbor.
Leonard, 26, was a longtime Lamesa resident who had only left the Dawson County Sheriff s Department, where he worked for about a year, just three weeks before taking the job in Concho County. He leaves behind a wife and young daughter.

EDEN, Texas A man shot two West Texas sheriff’s deputies dead and critically wounded a city employee while they were responding to a complaint about a dog, authorities said Tuesday.
Sgt. Justin Baker of the Texas Department of Public Safety said the suspected gunman was taken into custody after Monday night’s attack in Eden, a town of about 1,300 people about 210 miles southwest of Dallas.
DPS said Wednesday that Nicholas opened fire on Jones and Leonard after they made contact with him while responding to a dog complaint.
Officials have said little else about what happened before the shooting, which is being investigated by the Texas Rangers. Jeffrey Nicholas, 28, is jailed in nearby Tom Green County Detention Center on two charges of capital murder of a peace officer.
Hutchings, a city employee who helps with animal control, told the newspaper that the officers were helping city employees collect two dogs that had bitten someone earlier in the day.
The deputies had already caught one of the dogs and the other one ran into Nicholas yard. Hutchings said Nicholas did not own either animal.
