Fourteen people who had COVID-19 have died at Silverado memory care home in central Berkeley, making its outbreak the second deadliest at a long-term care facility in Alameda County, according to state data.
On Wednesday afternoon, the outdoor lobby of the care facility at Sacramento Street (at Bancroft Way) had a joyous buzz as residents and staff signed up for their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. But the outbreak and subsequent deaths has been devastating for the home, which cares for about 80 elderly residents who all have dementia, which includes Alzheimer’s disease. ....

Three more people who live in Berkeley have died of COVID-19, bringing the city’s death toll to 12, the city reported Thursday.
Up until the last day of the year, Berkeley’s deaths from the virus had remained at nine. The majority of other deaths happened in the summer, with the last occurring on Sept. 25 during the previous case surge. ....

Upscale home for dementia patients sued over deaths in COVID-19 outbreak [Los Angeles Times]
Relatives of three residents and a nurse who died following a coronavirus outbreak at an upscale Westside care facility for dementia patients are suing the home, alleging its owners placed residents and staff at risk by admitting a New York man infected with the virus.
The lawsuits filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court last week contend the home’s Irvine-based parent company, Silverado Senior Living, its chief executive Loren Shook, and a site supervisor are liable for wrongful death and elder abuse and neglect.
“Mr. Khorsandi did not get infected with the coronavirus due to some unforeseen act-of-God,” the suit filed by the family of Jakob Khorsandi, an 81-year-old who died in April, states. “Rather, he became infected because the corporate decision-makers chose to skirt safety and infection control standards.” ....
