View Comments Rain and delays for freighters didn t keep the powerboats from entertaining race fans that filled St. Clair s Palmer Park Sunday afternoon. The boats raced up and down the St. Clair River for the 27th running of the St. Clair River Classic Offshore Race. Last year’s races were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and organizers weren’t sure if this year’s would be held until several weeks before the event, said St. Clair County Board of Commissioners Chairman Jeff Bohm, who was acting as an emcee during the event. Between the races, boats on trailers lined North Riverside Avenue. Crowds gathered around them, looking at the boats and talking with racers. The river was closed to pleasure crafts, but freight traffic was still given the right-of-way, resulting in the delays. ....

View Comments Interior construction to repurpose the former Eddy Elementary School in St. Clair could begin as soon as this fall with plans for portions of the vacant building to become senior housing, offices and more. St. Clair planning commissioners approved a special zoning use for the property, 301 N. Ninth St., on Wednesday under the city’s adaptive reuse ordinance. It’s the first of several approvals needed for the project. Officials said it is part of a larger three-phase development push for Eddy, as well as nearby Gearing Elementary, which remains an active school for another three years, and the vacant property in between both schools. ....
May 10, 2021 St. Clair County Commissioners are exploring whether or not they could use some federal COIVD-19 relief money to help improve infrastructure along a growing corridor in the southern end of the county. Commission Chair Jeff Bohm tells our Paul Miller that the Marine City Highway/26 Mile Road corridor is being eyed for both residential and industrial development however things such as a lack of water and sewer are standing in its way. “If we didn’t’ receive some of this COVID money, we wouldn’t be having these conversations,” said Bohm. “Any of those communities along that corridor cannot afford to do water and sewer on their own.” Bohm says the county has had to turn down millions of dollars of proposed development along that corridor due to the lack of infrastructure. ....
