Women are carrying out more labor on farms. In a recent literature review focusing on agrarian societies in the drylands, ICARDA scientist Dina Najjar and Ph.D. student Jemima Baada at Western University in Canada investigate how outmigration of men affect women s roles in agriculture, as well as the wider effect in different contexts of the dry areas (rangeland, irrigated production and rainfed). The study revealed that women are carrying out more labor, both on and off farms, and that feminization of agrarian labor may reduce women’s earnings at the detriment to household incomes and make them more susceptible to economic, social, and cultural marginalization. ....

The COVID-19 outbreak with the resultant lockdown and stay-at-home measures have led to a surge in online activity by young people. This increased online presence has heightened their susceptibility to online sexual abuse, cyber bullying, exploitation, and other risks. To address this growing concern and to help combat online hate faced by many youth in Sri Lanka, the ‘Cyber Care’ mobile application was launched recently on World Safer Internet Day, commemorated each year on 9 February 2021. The app, which was created by Team Cyberwarders, a team who has successfully completed the incubation phase of the HackaDev: National Youth Social Innovation Challenge, aims to help alleviate and prevent cyber violence affecting youth of all genders in Sri Lanka. ....
Country Director, ILO, Bangladesh The ILO Convention Eliminating Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (C190) and its accompanying Recommendation (R206) went through a long process and it culminated in the adoption of the convention in the ILO Centenary Conference in 2019. The Bangladesh government voted in favour of the adoption of the Convention C190 and Recommendation R206 and we are optimistic about the ratification of C190 by the government of Bangladesh. Workers and Employers organisation need to engage to discuss the convention s ratification and figure out how it can be integrated into the national system through legislation to improve practices in addressing workplace violence and harassment.. Without addressing issues around violence and harassment, including GBV in the world of work, it is impossible to achieve the Decent Work Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ....
IITA seeks to build the next generation of female scientists and leaders Share Share 19 February 2021 On 11 February, the Women in Research and Science (WIRES) held a 13-hour marathon webinar to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event themed “CGIAR Women in Science: Shaping the world through science and innovation,” assembled CGIAR centers to each give an hour presentation. Besides hearing about some cutting-edge science, participants engaged directly with some of CGIAR’s finest women scientists and speakers. IITA joined WIRES to showcase how CGIAR women scientists are transforming how we look at food, land, and water systems worldwide. Apart from celebrating its female scientists, IITA also sought to train and attract young girls into science through programs like IITA Youth Agripreneurs (IYA) and Start Them Early Program (STEP).
