The Webinar was conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in association with Ministry of Education. It’s only after one leaves Lahore, Pakistan, and meets Indians, that one realises the place Lahore holds in their imagination. I have met several South Indians who had a family anecdote about Lahore to gloat over. So it’s understandable why Sameer Khatlani would’ve pined for a most hospitable, colourful place that boasts of having produced or welcomed famous names, not to mention a memorable time his elders had spent there. But Khatlani has another fish to fry too: to humanise Pakistanis because Indians have changed and they “watch nothing that humanises Pakistan.” It never fails to amaze me to see how easily normal, decent people can be fooled into hating another religion and a people, even their fellow citizens. ....

Gender and education in Indonesia: Progress with more work to be done

Socioeconomic and geographical disparities seem to play important roles on whether students complete their schooling. Adolescents of lower secondary school age from the poorest households are higher than four times more likely to be out of school than those from the wealthiest households. Economic-related conditions are observed to be the main reasons for not going to school. The out-of-school population is also concentrated among children living in rural, remote areas.

Child marriage: Girls continue to be disproportionately impacted, with large variations at the subnational level. Early marriage and schooling are inversely correlated, particularly for girls, as many drop out of school if they get married. Though Indonesia’s child marriage rate has been declining in recent years, it is still high. The study found wide variations at the sub-national level.
