Unlike in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, popular uprisings in Yemen have not brought down the country s ruler. But with more and more women protestors taking the lead in demonstrations, that might change.
Yemeni women are beginning to flex their political muscles
Anti-government protestors have nicknamed the grey asphalt space in front of Sana a University Change Square. Demonstrators have been camping out there for several months, and among their ranks are a conspicuous number of women.
Women are well-represented, too, among protestors in the southern city of Taez, the second largest in Yemen. They are calling for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is in Saudi Arabia attempting to recover from injuries suffered in an assassination attempt this June, to step down. ....

Clashes between students from Bogazici University and Turkish police show no sign of abating. Many students have been arrested, while the interior minister has lashed out with homophobic hate speech over an artwork. 
Students at Bogazici University in Istanbul have been protesting for weeks about a controversial appointment
Turkish police have responded to protests by students at Istanbul s Bogazici University with an iron fist. On Monday alone, they arrested 159 students 61 of them remain in custody, according to the Turkish news agency Anadolu.  Since early January, there have been regular police raids or arbitrary arrests of students who have been protesting against the appointment of Professor Melih Bulu, a supporter of Erdogan, as the rector of the prestigious university.  ....

Turkey lashes out against criticism of anti-LGBTQI rhetoric
Turkey has rejected criticism of its handling of student protests and of homophobic and transphobic comments by leading officials, warning outsiders to not get involved.
Turkey has clamped down on the student protests despite promises of democratic reforms
The Turkish Foreign Ministry responded on Thursday to the international outcry over its handling of monthlong student protests at one of the country s top universities. In a statement, it warned outsiders to not get involved in Turkey s internal affairs.
The statement followed condemnation by the US, EU and the United Nations of Turkey s response to the protests. Riot police clashed with students at Istanbul s Bogazici University, detaining hundreds and even carrying out raids on individuals homes. ....

Hagerty fills Senate team with 13 ex-Trump admin staffers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Freshman Republican U.S. Sen. Bill Hagerty has picked more than a dozen former members of the Trump administration to join his Washington office, including a chief of staff who also worked for former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and former Sen. Bob Corker.
Hagerty announced 23 additions to his Senate team Thursday, with John Rader leading the office as chief of staff.
Rader most recently served as deputy assistant to the president for strategic initiatives. He also served on the National Security Council under former President Donald Trump and worked alongside Hagerty on Trump’s 2016 transition team. ....
