School's Covid cases spike | Barnsley Chronicle

×
THERE has been an increase in the number of students testing positive for coronavirus at Penistone Grammar School.
Pupils in years seven, nine and ten have been affected by additional confirmed cases of the virus, and those who have been in prolonged contact with those confirmed cases are isolating at home for ten days.
Public health bosses in the town say they are happy with the school’s protocol measures, and principal Paul Crook told the Chronicle yesterday that there are ‘no more and no less’ cases than in any other secondary school in Barnsley.
He said: “There had been no cases since Easter but in the last seven days we’ve had a small increase. ....

Vaccine surge prompts praise from health boss

×
HEALTH bosses in the town have praised residents after a vaccination spike saw 6,000 people receiving their second dose in a day last weekend.
The surge in demand, on Saturday, means more than half of the town’s adults - just over 112,000 - are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
More than three-quarters of people in Barnsley have also received their first vaccine injection - with a total of 155,549 and a 76.1 per cent uptake among the adult population.
Julia Burrows, the town’s director of public health, told the Chronicle she is ‘so pleased’ to see the number of people getting their vaccine - and hopes that more will follow suit in the coming weeks. ....

Youngsters told to keep masks on

×
BARNSLEY youngsters have been advised to wear face coverings while in school classrooms or communal areas - despite national guidance no longer recommending them to do so.
Following Monday’s relaxation of the coroanvirus restrictions, the country’s position on the use of face coverings in school and college changed in line with the move into step three of the government’s roadmap out of lockdown.
Although this change means that face coverings are no longer recommended for pupils and students, health leaders are still able to offer their own localised advice.
Schools across the town have been contacted by Barnsley public health boss Julia Burrows and the council’s executive director of children’s services, Mel John-Ross, recommending that face coverings are still worn. ....

Barnsley monitoring Indian variant but 'welcome' low rates

×
BARNSLEY is not one of the areas currently battling rising cases of the Indian variant of coronavirus, health bosses in the town have confirmed.
The latest rate of infection is 31.6 per 100,000 people - a dwindling figure which is ‘welcome’ news for the town’s director of public health, Julia Burrows.
Ms Burrows also confirmed that the town is not one of 86 councils to have five or more confirmed cases of the virus’ so-called Indian variant - though she says ‘it’s more likely than not’ it will cause concern in Barnsley in the future.
She said: “I know that some of you may be worried about the VOC-21APR-02 variant, first identified in India, following the Secretary of State’s announcement last week and the wide media coverage since. ....
