ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) This was the menu for children in Rochester City elementary schools Monday, the first day back in a building in 11 months: Cheese, crackers, a pear, milk, juice and a turkey meat stick.
RCSD and Foodlink say this meal meets the federal nutritional standards, but when people saw a picture of what was served, they contacted News10NBC.
City elementary schools re-opened this week. Despite the RCSD re-opening plan saying there will be hot lunches, there are none.
The problem is a combination of severe budget issues that preceded COVID and laid off cooking employees the district is struggling to get back.

Wegmans Food Markets provided Foodlink with significant support last spring with a $700,000 donation to aid its early COVID-19 relief efforts as food insecurity rose dramatically in the Rochester area.
This fall, Wegmans customers matched that generosity – and chipped in a little extra.
The results of the annual Check Out Hunger campaign with Wegmans were announced today, with a grand total of $710,212.34 raised from customers’ donations at 21 Rochester-area stores. The total is the highest since the campaign began in 1993.
