Danville Area Community College in Illinois will allow students to take any summer course for free if they prove, in person or via email or text, that they were vaccinated. Students may still need to buy books or lab equipment, but tuition and fees for the course will be waived, according to the college’s website.
Julia Jackson-Newsom, associate vice chancellor for strategy and policy at UNC Greensboro, said despite the blunt enticements, students are having a hard time deciding whether to get vaccinated. She described “really nervous” students coming to the campus vaccination clinic and asking staff if getting vaccinated is the right choice. ....

Case count tops 943,000
At least 943,693 people in North Carolina have tested positive for the coronavirus and 12,387 have died since March 2020, according to state health officials.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported 2,475 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, up from 2,434 the day before.
Edgecombe County is the only red county in the state s tiered COVID-19 county alert system, indicating it has the most severe spread. There were no red counties a few weeks ago, The News & Observer reported. ....

I ve been watching higher ed COVID-19 dashboards for nearly a year now, and the recent numbers at local campuses honestly look pretty good.

I m not kidding! Case counts are way, way down from a month ago. Clusters aren t clustering like they were in the fall. It s clear from the number ofschoolsthat have announced plans for in-person commencements in May that higher ed generally thinks the worst of the pandemic is behind it.
That said, COVID-19 hasn t vanished — far from it. Duke University got swamped by a COVID-19 surge after mostly avoiding it for a semester and a half.  ....
