Vermont native Sophie Caldwell Hamilton announced on Thursday via her Instagram account that she has decided to call it a career. And what a decorated career it was. The two-time Olympian and two-time World Cup event champion is simply ready to begin a new chapter in her life. âI think even though there are so many things about it that I still love, I felt ready to be moving on to the next thing,â said Caldwell Hamilton during a phone interview from Germany, where the World Cup has been ongoing. âI also wanted to stop while I do still love the sport and while things are still going pretty well because Iâd like those memories to stay positive.â ....

Since the first Winter Games in 1924, the United States has just two Olympic medals in cross-country skiing: Brattleboro, Vt.âs Bill Koch won a silver in the 1976 Olympics, and 42 years later the womenâs team eked out a gold in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. (For comparison, Norway has 121 Olympic medals in Nordic ski racing. Russian and Soviet skiers have 109. Sweden and Finland, 80 apiece. With its two medals, the U.S. is tied with Slovenia; only Bulgaria has fewer, one.) ....
