THE Calabar-Itu highway, a federal link road connecting Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, has become a major eyesore following years of neglect by successive administrations. The deplorable state of the roads, according to some businessmen who daily ply the road from Aba to Uyo and Calabar for food business; garri, yam, rice and other farm edibles majorly produced in northern Cross River State, including Ugep, Ogoja, Odukpani, Obubura and Ikom, has dwindled the volume of trade between the two sister states and other parts of the South-South and South-East regions.
“We have encountered accidents on several occasions along this road trying to get to Calabar, the state capital, while trying to access the northern part of Cross River state, where we buy our farm produce like garri, yams and rice for sale in major markets in other states,” Nwachukwu Nnana, a dealer in farm produce laments. ....

Delay costs FG additional N679b on road projects

Undue delay occasioned by bureaucracy and poor funding in the execution, rehabilitation and reconstruction works on critical roads in the country has cost the Federal Government at least N679 billion, an investigation has revealed.
The East-West road comes tops with N515 billion; Lagos-Ibadan N144 billion and Sagamu-Benin road comes third with N20 billion
An official of the Ministry of Works and Housing said the losses arose from contract variation, inflation and foreign exchange fluctuation.

Nigerian stocks on Thursday sustained its positive outlook as the overall performance measures, NSE ASI and market capitalisation, rose further by 0.56 per cent each.
Market watchers attributed the development to renewed confidence as bargain hunters continue to leverage on undervalued stocks.
The market breath however closed positive as the number of gainers at the close of trading session was 28 while decliners closed at 22.
Consequently, the All-Share Index gained 238.65 basis points or 0.56 per cent to close at 42,169.41 index points as against 41,930.73 recorded the previous day while the market capitalisation of equities appreciated by N125bn to close at N21.934tn from N21.93tn as market sentiment remained on the green zone. ....

Nigerian government warns public against using Lagos Airport Road flyover bridge

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr Olukayode Popoola, on Friday advised the public to stay off Airport Road Flyover in Lagos dangerously burnt by fire, pending the determination of its structural safety.
The bridge which runs over Toyota Bus Stop on the Apapa-Oshodi-Ojota-Oworonshoki Expressway being reconstructed, was engulfed by fire when a petrol tanker burst into flames on Thursday.
The federal and Lagos State governments on Friday carried out a joint inspection to know the extent of damage to the bridge and adjoining roads.
Leading the state and federal officials, Popoola raised concerns over the safety of the bridge, saying that its structural integrity had yet to be ascertained. ....
