Council concerned about lack of lake plans | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN With the city taking ownership of McKelvey Lake, some city council members said they are concerned there isn’t a plan in place for the property.
Councilwoman Basia Adamczak, D-7th Ward, said she also is bothered that the acquisition was done without council approval.
“At this moment, I can’t say I support it,” she said. “I don’t know enough about it. It can be a good benefit, but I consider it a financial burden at this point. It’s a liability. It’s not really smart and we (council members) should have been involved.”
Mayor Jamael Tito Brown said several members of council participated in the conversations to acquire the lake property on the city’s East Side. ....

YOUNGSTOWN Systemic racism and the continued unjustified killing of black men by white police officers still tear at the fabric of society, but the difference people of goodwill can make begins with speaking against both, several students say.
“When you see a wrongdoing and do nothing about it, you’re being a silent witness,” Lekeila Houser, a Youngstown State University senior and Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past member, said. “These men were wrongfully killed by those who are supposed to protect us.” ....

City Council is expected to OK funding requests | News, Sports, Jobs

Each council member this year received $15,000 in discretionary funds and a $5,000 travel allowance.
With no traveling this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, council members transferred that $5,000 to their discretionary funds accounts except Councilmen Jimmy Hughes, D-2nd Ward, and Mike Ray, D-4th Ward, who will have it done at Wednesday’s meeting.
The discretionary money goes toward community and nonprofit organizations and their activities or expenses as well as certain city projects.
As Wednesday is the last regularly scheduled meeting this year, council members are left with either using the money or losing it.
Council President DeMaine Kitchen isn’t using any of his $20,000. ....
