The Daily Northwestern | Lead On: Loopholes in federal lead law left 5th Ward in the dark about what is in its water

Second Ward resident Regina Sant’Anna has helped her elderly neighbor carry hundreds of boxes of bottled water from her car to her home. Living on the border of the historically Black 5th Ward, Sant’Anna has noticed that some residents are concerned about their water quality.
“At times in underserved communities of color, brown or Black, you have a lot of people investing in (bottled) water,” Sant’Anna said. “You have to put in your budget plastic bottled water, because you do not trust the water systems.”
Sant’Anna’s neighbor is one of many Evanston residents concerned about their drinking water. Home to Evanston’s only waste transfer station, the 5th Ward specifically has suffered from discriminatory environmental policies that impact residents’ air quality and health. While the reasons for distrust may vary, the 2014 Flint, Mich. water crisis renewed city-wide concern for lead in water. ....

NSF invests in fundamental research to support biotechnology and advance the U.S. bioeconomy across the sciences and engineering. 
Presented by NSF s Bioeconomy Coordinating Committee and NSF Directorates, this distinguished lecture series will bring in individual speakers and panels representing the science and technology funded by a Directorate every month.  Speakers will present on research and broader impacts in areas associated with biotechnology and the bioeconomy that are of interest broadly across the foundation.
All sessions will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern. Individual lectures will run until 12 noon, including question and answer, and panel sessions will run until 1:00 p.m. All sessions will be conducted virtually; viewing links for those lectures that do not have them listed below will be provided shortly. ....
