Pamplin Media Group - Portland mulls building review reform to spur development

Portland mulls building review reform to spur development May 12 2021 The Design Overlay Zone Amendments proposal would streamline the building approval process while limiting public input in some cases. Portland s rules for approving new construction could be streamlined under a proposal that would also limit public input including on affordable housing projects and those rising up to seven floors above many bustling thoroughfares. Since 2016, consultants, multiple city bureaus and public commissions have been cooking up the hefty plan known as the Design Overlay Zone Amendments, or DOZA, which had its first showing at City Hall during a virtual meeting on Wednesday, May 12.

Legendary Volunteer dies on Hunger Strike

» Staff Reporter IRIS - the republican magazine, Winter 2006 On 12 May 1981 at 5.43 pm, just seven days after the death of Bobby Sands, Hunger Striker Francis Hughes died. The South Derry man had endured 59 days on Hunger Strike. His sisters Noreen, Maria and Vera and brother Roger were by his bedside when he passed away. Paying tribute to Hughes, the IRA said he was one of the bravest soldiers of the armed struggle against British rule. Sinn Féin’s Gerry Adams called on British Premier Margaret Thatcher to accept that her efforts to stare down the Hunger Strike had failed, and for Taoiseach Charles Haughey to end his silence which Adams said encouraged British intransigence.

'It's sad but nobody is surprised': The Mail readers react to over 100 jobs at risk at GSK

The news follows the $350m sale of one of GSK’s divisions to pharmaceuticals company Sandoz. Barry Mcclure said: “It’s sad but nobody is surprised. It was a fantastic place to work.” Kevin Myers said: “Worked in there for 20 years. It was never going to survive after they pulled the plug on the bio farm. They have given it another four years. It will be shut in 18 months.” Al Phizzer Phizacklea said: “This has been coming for years. No surprise really.” Paul Martin said: “They have been telling people it will shut for years. I worked in there for 12 years and watched buildings coming down all the time. Don’t know why people are so surprised – the writing was on the cards.”
