A New Jersey town fired a veteran officer on Monday after she called Black Lives Matter demonstrators terrorists on Facebook and suspended another officer on the force for commenting on the post.
Hopewell Township unanimously voted to terminate Sara Erwin and demote Sgt. Mandy Gray, who is now serving a suspension, due to a June 2020 social media post that went up during the height of riots and protests that followed the death of George Floyd. Both law enforcement personnel accrued over 20 years on the force.
“Last night as I left for work I had my two kids crying for me not to go to work, the Facebook post, authored by Erwin, read, according to ....

N.J. town fires police officer, suspends another for calling Black Lives Matter protestors ‘terrorists’
Updated May 05, 2021;
Hopewell Township has fired a police officer who described Black Lives Matter protesters as “terrorists” and will suspend and demote another for replying to a comment on the Facebook post.
The fired officer, Sara Erwin, and Sgt. Mandy Grey, who will be suspended for six months, are exemplary and decorated officers with “absolutely no disciplinary history,” their lawyer Frank Crivelli said Monday evening.
The town’s actions against them, he said, are “disgraceful and cowardice.”
Gray was the first female officer hired in Hopewell Township, and was the first sergeant when promoted in 2019, a rank she will lose in the demotion. ....

Hopewell Township police consider new marijuana laws 'problematic'

Recently signed legislation by Gov. Phil Murphy legalizing and decriminalizing recreational marijuana has presented a specific hurdle for the Hopewell Township Police Department.
In a message released to residents of Hopewell Valley, police administration said that one aspect not expected under the new laws signed on Feb. 22 had been the prohibiting of police departments to notify parents or guardians, if young people under 21 years old are found to possess marijuana or alcoholic beverages as a first offense.
“This new law forbids officers to contact a parent or guardian. Our only action that will be taken will be to issue a written warning, which will not be provided to the individual’s parent or guardian,” the police department statement said in its March 3 statement.  “After reviewing the new policy, what presents itself as most problematic to the police department, is our inability to freely communicate with parents. We believe parents deserve and need to know ....
