Michael G. Barbour 1942 Jan. 7, 2021 Michael Barbour lived a full and generous life that ended peacefully in his home in Winters on Jan. 7, 2021. Born in 1942 to George and Mae Barbour of Jackson, Mich., he attended MSU, then completed a Ph.D. at Duke University in botany. Recruited to UC Davis in 1967, he introduced many students to California’s botany. His students went on to transform the documentation of the California landscape. Beyond academia, Michael performed with the Winters Theatre Company, sang with a Winters folk group and danced with Pam Trokanski’s Parkinson’s dance class. He and his wife owned and ran Classic Video in Winters. ....
Malekula, the second-largest island in the Vanuatu archipelago, has a linguistic connection to Aotearoa. All of its many languages are distantly related to te reo MÄori and the island is the site of a long-term project to document them. Vanuatu has been described as the worldâs âdensest linguistic landscapeâ, with as many as 145 languages spoken by a population of fewer than 300,000 people. Malekula itself is home to about 25,000 people, who between them speak more than 30 Indigenous languages. Some are spoken by just a few hundred people. For 20 years, our team of linguists has been working with small communities to document their languages and to develop resources to help preserve them. ....
