Silver Shuffles Dance: Triangle seniors surviving the pandemic on the dance floor


On this week that marked one year since the first positive test of COVID-19 in Wake County, there s a story of hope that starts on the dance floor. Dozens of Triangle seniors are refusing to let the loneliness and isolation of quarantine get them down.
Brittany Mora and Courtney White co-founded Silver Shuffles Dance Company last year. It s aimed at seniors 55 years and up. Then, the pandemic hit. It could have crushed the business. Then, they found out just how much local seniors needed it.
We started to realize that this was kind of bigger than a dance class, Mora said. ....

With its fish-scale scalloped shingles and pointed finials atop each gable, Duck’s Nest conjures up the Victorian era.
Viewed from Lake Trail, it may appear to be a charming house from the turn of the 20th century. But it also has a fascinating history, which includes weathering hurricanes, architectural styles, and the development of Palm Beach.
The house gets its name from the ducks that roosted on the extensive freshwater marsh, now filled in, which were formerly located east of the building. It’s hard to imagine, but at the time the only way to access this house was by boat via Lake Worth (now referred to as the Intracoastal Waterway). ....
