Credit Travis Ragsdale A member of the Kentucky Attorney General’s search warrant task force was sanctioned this year for publicly defending the search warrant process and the judge who approved the warrant for Breonna Taylor’s home. Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Charles Cunningham received a private reprimand from the Judicial Conduct Commission in January for comments he made in an op-ed published in The Courier Journal. The reprimand doesn’t name Cunningham, but he confirmed to KyCIR that he is the subject of the disciplinary action. Cunningham was publicly named last week as a member of the task force the attorney general will charge with scrutinizing and suggesting possible reforms for how search warrants are obtained and executed in Kentucky. ....

Dress becomes more informal. Lawyers or litigants have a drink. The setting is a bed or even a hair salon. The background gives too much away. The mute button isn’t on. The Louisville Courier Journal published its story after a lawyer appeared as a kitten during a Zoom hearing while he struggled to remove the filter. “The bloopers and blunders of virtual hearings have provided comic relief during an otherwise bleak and dismal year,” the newspaper reports, citing an article in the Louisville Bar Association newsletter Bar Briefs. ....

District Court Judge Julie Kaelin ruled defense attorney O Neil in direct criminal contempt after an unusual dispute in a virtual session of court. During the hearing, parties were set to approve a plea agreement for defendant Curtis Burns in a misdemeanor criminal mischief case. Burns expressed confusion about the deal, leading O Neil to explain that her client is mentally ill. Judge Kaelin stated, It is fine that he has mental illness, but that doesn t mean that we can go through with a plea if he doesn t understand what he is agreeing to. ....
