After calf whale death near St. Augustine, experts say stay back

After a critically endangered baby North Atlantic right whale was struck by a boat and killed last weekend, experts are warning people to keep a wary eye out for the animals.
The 22-foot-long right whale calf was struck by a boat around the St. Augustine Inlet on Feb. 12, and washed up at Anastasia State Park the next day with severe propeller injuries and broken ribs. Its mother, whale #3230, nicknamed “Infinity,” was also seen with injuries.
The results of the calf’s necropsy are pending.
“There’s a reason why we ask (people) to slow their boats down and keep their distance. I think the evidence speaks for itself,” said Julie Albert, right whale coordinator with the Marine Resources Council. “Even if you don’t care about whales, you spend a lot of money on your boat. I guess people don’t think that hitting whales will do a lot of damage (to the boat), but it does.” ....

13 right endangered whale mom-calf pairs spotted off Atlantic coast

Thirteen North Atlantic right whale mother-calf pairs have been spotted of the southeast Atlantic Ocean coast this season offering a glimmer of hope for the animals, after recent years of lower births.
Nine of those pairs were spotted off Florida s coast, including four pairs spotted off Volusia and Flagler counties. Researchers say they are thrilled. Years of low birthing numbers have been a great cause for concern for the species, as estimates suggest there could be as few as 360 right whales left.
Ralph Bundy, a co-researcher and drone pilot with the Marineland Right Whale Project, said many of the spotted whales were seen because of a predominantly westerly wind, which smooths the ocean surface and makes it easier for people to view them from the shoreline. ....
