New DPK chairman should reflect diverse opinions
The ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) elected five-term lawmaker Song Young-gil as its new chairman during its convention Sunday. In a highly-contested race, Song, a former Incheon mayor, earned 35.6 percent of the vote, defeating runner-up Rep. Hong Young-pyo by 0.59 percentage points. The party also selected five Supreme Council members ― Reps. Kim Yong-min, Kim Young-bae, Back Hye-ryun, Kang Byung-won and Jun Hye-sook.
We believe the DPK members have chosen Song, widely regarded as representing the party s non-mainstreamers, as the new chairman with expectations that he will rebuild the party following its humiliating defeat in the April 7 mayoral by-elections in Seoul and Busan. He is also tasked with managing a primary election to choose the party s candidate for the next presidential election slated for March 2022. ....

Five-term legislator and former Incheon Mayor Rep. Song Young-gil was elected the new chairman of the ruling Democratic Party Sunday as it seeks a major reform drive following a recent election defeat.
Song earned 35.6 percent of the ballots cast before and during the party s congress held at its headquarters in Seoul earlier in the day, defeating Reps. Hong Young-pyo and Woo Won-shik, both in their fourth terms. ....

A new bill proposed by the Korea Fair Trade Commission s (KFTC) to regulate platform operators such as Google, Naver and Coupang has triggered controversy, with the Korea Communication Commission (KCC) saying the regulation is redundant, and the companies claiming it is excessive.
The so-called Online Platform Fairness Act targets up to 30 domestic and international firms here whose income generated by commission fees exceeds 10 billion won ($9.05 million). ....
