By Judy Berger | January 27, 2021
On January 21, the New Rochelle Public Library (NRPL) and the Consulate General of Israel in New York co-hosted a virtual opening of the Israel Forum Collection at the NRPL. The collection’s books, mostly translated from Hebrew to English and Spanish, include a variety of topics, including culture, history, economics, agriculture, fiction, homemaking, fashion and exercise. The books will be available for loan, and related Zoom programs will enhance the collection’s mission.
NRPL President Emeritus Haina Just-Michael, hosting the event, said: “I don’t live in New Rochelle anymore, but New Rochelle lives in my family’s hearts and souls. Sixth Grader Elissa Tobin Brightens Chanukah for Survivors

By Judy Berger | December 24, 2020
Elissa Tobin, a sixth grader at Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy, celebrated her bat mitzvah the weekend of December 19. Like many bar and bat mitzvah youth, Elissa had to deviate from her original celebration plan of a big women’s tefillah at Agudath Sholom, where she would give a dvar Torah from the bimah at the conclusion of services, followed by a lunch at the synagogue for family and friends. This plan was whittled down, to a women’s tefillah of 25 participants, a Zoom Havdalah which included both a dvar Torah from Elissa and a photo montage. Elissa’s weekend concluded with a Sunday drive-by of local friends and family to wish Elissa mazal tov. ....

Judy Berger lost her husband, Leslie, on New Year’s Eve 2019, but he was very much on her mind during the second day of Hanukkah last Saturday. That’s when Berger, 73, achieved a milestone: her bat mitzvah.
“He was never bar mitzvahed, and I thought, ‘OK, I’m going to do this for him and for me,’ ” Berger said. “This was something I did for me and for my husband. It was always in the back of my mind, and the fact that I accomplished it at this point in my life, I’m glad that I did.”
Berger was part of a group adult b’nai mitzvah at United Hebrew Congregation that was conducted over Zoom. The six UH congregants ended a yearlong study program with the ceremony.  ....

'The Torah and the World Must Speak to Each Other'

By Judy Berger | December 09, 2020
Rabbi Tully Harcztark, of SAR High School, said that as he was growing up, Modern Orthodoxy was defined through a specific set of issues: Rigorous secular education, women learning Torah and unwavering support for the state of Israel.
“We certainly support all three. Acknowledging that the world around us is constantly changing, we should define ourselves not by issues but by methods. The Torah and the world must speak to each other.” Rabbi Harcsztark noted that Modern Orthodoxy does effect change; these concepts have spun over to other sects of
Judaism positively, adding that Modern Orthodoxy gives Judaism the best way to adapt to change while adhering to ....
