Staff Writer SALEM City council put its opposition to the state’s proposed killing of the city health department in writing Tuesday, citing the department’s invaluable efforts during the pandemic and overall service to citizens. “The city of Salem strenuously objects to any effort by the state of Ohio to abolish the local Salem City Health Department, and moves that any effort to study the feasibility of dissolving the same or otherwise abolish it be immediately stricken from any state budget proposals,” the resolution said. Council voted 7-0 to approve the resolution, which noted the state only contributes $3,400 per year towards the city health district’s operation. Staff Writer SALEM City Health Commissioner Alanna Stainbrook reported more than 800 people are on the city health district’s waiting list for the coronavirus vaccine. The district is administering 100 first doses per week to people who are registered and another 100 doses per week to people receiving their second injection. The number of doses available is dependent on how many the district receives each week. “As fast as they can get us the vaccine, we’re getting it into arms,” she said. Last month, the city health district administered 340 COVID-19 shots, but now she said the number is up to 740. The city is one of several locations where residents in the area can receive the vaccine and more providers have been added, but people are getting a little impatient. ....
