Taiwan ETF Surges Off Rebound in Tech

A Taiwan country-specific exchange traded fund surged Tuesday, with Taiwanese equities enjoying their best day since March last year, as a rebound in technology stocks helped lift the island country’s market.
Among the top performing non-leveraged ETFs of Tuesday, the
iShares MSCI Taiwan ETF (EWT) increased 5.5%, paring back some of its recent losses. EWT had declined 9.8% over the past week.
The iShares MSCI Taiwan ETF includes a hefty 58.8% tilt toward the technology sector, with a large 19.6% position in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.
Taiwanese markets bounced back after retreating Monday in response to the government’s decision to enact shutdown measures to restrict its worst outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Taiwan’s Taiex benchmark has pulled back nearly 10% since the end of April after a surge in untraceable Covid-19 cases fueled concerns over the strength of the island’s economic recovery, Bloomberg reports. ....

(Bloomberg) Taiwan imposed restrictions on gatherings and ordered entertainment businesses to shutter operations as it raised the alert level in its capital to battle a surge in local Covid-19 infections.

Taiwan stocks plummet on Covid-19 woes, tech rout


Taipei (BLOOMBERG) - Taiwan stocks slumped the most since March last year on Wednesday (May 12) as concern over further tightening of coronavirus-linked restrictions and a global tech selloff spooked investors.
The Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index finished the session 4.1 per cent lower after slumping as much as 8.6 per cent in morning trading, the worst intraday loss since 1969.
Having fallen 9.6 per cent from an April high, the gauge narrowly missed a technical correction. Heavyweight Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and Hon Hai Precision Industry were among the biggest drags, down 1.9 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively.
The selloff marks a sharp turn for the equity index which ranked among Asia s best performers before it started to retreat at the end of April. ....

TAIWAN stocks plunged as concern over further tightening of coronavirus-linked restrictions and a global tech selloff spooked investors.
The Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index (Taiex) was in freefall during mid-morning trading, slumping as much as 8.6% before paring the losses to 5.9% as of 12:22 p.m. local time. Heavyweight Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. were among the biggest drags, and more than a hundred stocks on the gauge fell by the daily 10% limit.

(Bloomberg) Taiwan stocks slumped the most since March last year as concern over further tightening of coronavirus-linked restrictions and a global tech selloff spooked investors.
The Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index finished the session 4.1% lower after slumping as much as 8.6% in morning trading, the worst intraday loss since 1969. Having fallen 9.6% from an April high, the gauge narrowly missed a technical correction. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which has a 30% weighting in the benchmark, settled 1.9% lower after tanking as much as 9.3%.
