Singapore-based Sembcorp Marine relies on SCHOTTEL’s azimuthal hybrid drive system SYDRIVE-E for the world’s first LNG hybrid tug. With this first in a series of 12 vessels, Sembcorp Marine will build the world’s first hybrid LNG-fuelled tug fleet that will replace its existing diesel-powered tugs. Singapore-based Sembcorp Marine has picked Schottel’s azuimuthal hybrid drive system for the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) hybrid tug.
With this first in a series of 12 vessels, Sembcorp Marine will build the world’s first hybrid LNG-fueled tug fleet that will replace its existing diesel-powered tugs, Schottel said in its statement.
The vessel is designed by LMG Marin, a unit of Sembcorp Marine, and a naval architecture design house in Bergen, Norway.

Rolls-Royce is supplying two mtu 16V 4000 M55RN gas engines to Sembcorp Marine Integrated Yard for the construction of the world’s first LNG-hybrid powered tug.
The harbour tug will be operated in Singapore by Jurong Marine Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine. The new LNG-hybrid tug is the first of 12 tugs that Sembcorp Marine plans to design and build to replace the existing diesel-powered ones between now and 2025.
“We are very happy to be part of Sembcorp Marine’s efforts in environmental protection and adopting new green technologies in their operations. The mtu marine gas engines are part of Rolls-Royce s Green and High-Tech programme. Without exhaust gas aftertreatment, they emit no sulfur oxides only very small quantities of nitrogen oxide, and particulate mass is below the verification limit”, says Chew Xiang Yu, Head of Rolls-Royce Power Systems commercial marine business in Asia. ....

Rolls-Royce will supply two gas engines to Sembcorp Marine Integrated Yard for the construction of Singapore’s first LNG-hybrid powered tug, the company said on January 18.
The harbour tug will be operated in Singapore by Jurong Marine Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine. The new LNG-hybrid tug is the first of 12 tugs that Sembcorp Marine plans to design and build to replace the existing diesel-powered ones between now and 2025, Rolls Royce said. The tug is expected to be completed later this year.
“The mtu marine gas engines are part of Rolls-Royce s green and high-tech programme. Rolls-Royce has been contracted to supply two mtu 16V 4000 M55RN gas engines for the world’s first LNG-hybrid powered tugboat.
