Once visited by Saudi King, Mumbai s Juma Masjid pond gets a makeover Wed, Jun 09 2021 04:19:14 PM By Quaid Najmi Mumbai, Jun 9 (IANS): As the city continues in spells of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, the management of the historic Juma Masjid in south Mumbai once graced by the late King Saud bin Abdulaziz al Saud of Saudi Arabia have embarked upon an unusual mission clean-up of the ancient pond inside the mosque. A team of workers got onto the task from Monday, descended in the 10-feet-deep pond, caught all the goldfish, silverfish and turtles and transferred them to a temporary fish tank, emptied up the misty greyish-green water, and launched a thorough weeklong cleaning operation, along with minor repairs on the floor. ....

The active cases have increased to 37,10,525 comprising 15.65 per cent of the total infections. The national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 83.26 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,97,34,823 while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.09 per cent, the data stated. ....

Gopakumar Case booked against masjid authorities, COVID-19 patient’s relatives for performing religious rites en route to burial A case has been registered against authorities of the MIC (Malik Islamic Centre) Juma Masjid, Thrissur and relatives of a COVID-19 patient, whose body was taken to the Masjid for religious rites. Body of Khadeeja (53) of Varavur was taken to the MIC Juma Masjid, at Sakthan Nagar on May 10, en route to burial, for religious rites. It is alleged that the body was washed and religious rites were done on the Masjid compound. The case was charged against the Masjid authorities and the relatives on the direction of the health department. The body was taken to the Masjid in an ambulance belonging to a private charitable institution. The ambulance was also taken into custody. ....

Exactly a year later, even while the country had 3 million active cases and the total tally had crossed 11 million, India was preparing for the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious congregations in the world, scheduled to begin from April 1. While experts across the country cautioned against holding the event, the administration turned a deaf ear to those appeals. At the event itself, even while state government advertisements paid lip-service to Covid protocols, it was clear to all but the most credulous that it wouldn’t be possible to observe the protocol at this mela of millions.
