Cranston police Officer Thomas Lavey testifies in trial of Officer Andrew Leonard

The Providence Journal
WARWICK In a secure area of the Cranston Police Department, Officer Andrew Leonard noticed something about a prisoner:
The young man s nostrils were flaring.
The man, Gian Mattiello, had quickly turned toward Leonard as another officer tried to remove a tie from Mattiello s long hair. Then, Mattiello had moved his forearm in a way that broke Leonard s grip on his right arm.
This was the testimony that Leonard gave Wednesday in District Court, where he is on trial, accused of assaulting Mattiello in an excessive use of force in March of 2020.
Leonard took the stand after prosecutors rested their case. His appearance followed testimony from Mattiello, who accused the officer of ambushing him. And it trailed testimony from a Cranston police captain who said he was troubled by surveillance video of what had transpired in the booking area where Leonard s presence wasn t even necessary in the first place. ....

Cranston police officer found guilty of assault, won t serve jail time
WARWICK A Cranston police officer faced a year of probation on Thursday after a District Court magistrate found that he had assaulted an unarmed prisoner in a secure area of the Cranston Police Department.
Officer Andrew Leonard missed various opportunities to de-escalate the situation and opted for unreasonable force, according to Magistrate Judge J. Patrick O Neill, who gave his verdict immediately after closing arguments Thursday afternoon.
It s a sad case all around, O Neill said.
O Neill rejected Leonard s attempts to justify a series of punches and a knee-shot that he delivered to 26-year-old Gian Mattiello on March 5, 2020. The assault by the police station s surveillance cameras. ....

Cranston police officer assault trial begins

He testified that the officer connected with a knee and took a blow to his face, but he shied away from detailing the exchange blow by blow.
I m not watching the guy s movements, Mattiello said. I m in the fight. You know. I shouldn t have to go through that.
Mattiello was the first witness in the case, taking questions from Assistant Attorney General Daniel Guglielmo before Magistrate Judge J. Patrick O Neill.
He had been arrested in the wake of a domestic incident involving his brother. He was accused of assaulting his brother with a piece of aluminum. Taken into custody by Leonard and Officer Zachary Burns, he faced a charge of felony assault. ....
