Sheriff defends Office's professional standards in often-testy Legislature meeting

The Erie County Legislature s Public Safety Committee invited Sheriff Timothy Howard to face questions Thursday about alleged acts of misconduct by personnel within his department. The Sheriff defended his Office s professional standards procedures in a nearly two-hour meeting that got heated at times.
Legislators quickly tabled all legislation on the agenda for later discussion, including the proposed Jail Management Transparency and Accountability Act. But with Sheriff Howard and Undersheriff John Greenan present for the online committee meeting, lawmakers presented questions about numerous incidents involving deputies or jail attendees, and sought explanations for how the accused were disciplined.

The lone no vote came from Legislator Jeanne Vinal. The Democrat suggested the resolutions were politically motivated. She added that with Attorney General Letitia James already beginning an investigation, the resolutions are unnecessary.
“The thing is going through the facts,” Vinal said. “To jump on a bandwagon, the way they did in the Central Park Five and other times when people jumped on the bandwagon immediately that there s an accusation, men and women both have the right to be heard and have the whole thing decided.” ....

A Democratic county lawmaker in Buffalo said Thursday the three women who have accused Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual misconduct are motivated by politics, according to video footage obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The lawmaker, Jeanne Vinal, said during a legislature meeting she was going to vote against two county resolutions calling for independent investigations of allegations against Cuomo, saying to do so would be akin to jumping “on a bandwagon of the way they did in the Central Park Five.”
“I honestly in my heart feel that there is a political motive to some degree on this,” Vinal said. “The thing is going through the facts. To jump on a bandwagon of the way they did in the Central Park Five and other times when people jumped on the bandwagon immediately when there’s an accusation … men and women both have the right to be heard and have the whole thing decided.” ....
