A changing of the guard occurred Tuesday in the chambers of Aspen City Council as its newest member John Doyle was sworn into office and his predecessor, Ann Mullins, stepped down after serving for eight years.
Incumbent Ward Hauenstein also was sworn in to serve a second four-year term. He and Doyle were the highest vote-getters in the March election, beating out six other candidates.
Doyle and Hauenstein offered some comments after being sworn in, both in agreement in that they are honored and humbled to be elected as public servants.
“I’m looking forward to working with you all over the next four years and I am really excited to be working with staff,” Doyle said.

Billy Jack
(1971)
Jean Roberts’ (pseudonymous co-writer and Mrs. Tom Laughlin, Delores Taylor) hollow-voiced opening narration brings us up to speed on the legend of Billy Jack. He was a half-breed Vietnam vet who hated what war stood for in spite of adhering to a day-to-day doctrine of “Peace Through Pummeling.” And no one knew where he lived. What Jean fails to tell us is that Billy Jack, not Bruce Lee, deserves credit for introducing American audiences to the martial arts. And woe to those bad guys who refuse to vamoose the moment Billy begins removing his shoes.
Since France’s first pandemic lockdown nearly one year ago, university campuses have been shuttered and students have been limited to full-time online learning. Unlike other schools here, where in-person teaching opened up this past fall, university students have been left behind.
One consequence has been the social and academic isolation of online learning. Many college students have also lost part-time jobs and are struggling to pay rent, leading to a newfound financial uncertainty. Others have moved home or dropped out of school. A cluster of recent suicide attempts has highlighted the urgent need for more mental health and financial support for students.
