Meeting her niece for the first time changed the course of Lorraine Flood’s life. It was December 2018 and she had recently come home after two years in Manhattan. Upon her return to Dublin she had to confront a question she had been avoiding motherhood.
Before New York, she had been in a three-year relationship which ended. “I had really hoped it would go somewhere. I didn’t see the signs that it wasn’t going anywhere,” she says. “I had a career and I was waiting to meet somebody. I let that hold me back. I wanted to be a mother but I pushed it away. I didn’t feel I deserved to be a mother.” But then, when she saw her niece, she knew. “I felt an abundance of love. I was like, what am I waiting for? I realised it was what I really wanted.” ....
