Last year my column took one of two directions: Christian cultural issues or city planning issues. Sure, there were some necessary deviations into Star Wars and an adulation of Dak Prescott that my wife found disturbingly poetic, but for the most part, my printable thoughts are almost exclusively occupied by Church and State or rather, Church and City.
And it’s no coincidence; the two are more connected than they may seem.
Both represent collecting points for culture. Both have something to say about public beauty: the Church used architecture and public art to communicate the Gospel before literacy was common, and FDR commissioned public art to boost patriotism and the economy during the Depression. For years, Bremerton Mayor Greg Wheeler has been steadily building up almost every enforcement appendage imaginable: parking enforcement fines shipyard employees who park in front of your house on the street, code enforcement pays visits to deadbeat landlords, and of course there’s our well-staffed police. The city has gone after absentee landlords who let their rentals fall apart and pressed them to clean up, and I’ve personally been very impressed by BPD’s narcotics detectives.
Those are good things in their own right, but they allow us to consider forward-thinking policies with greater confidence. So many of the problems people associate with rentals aren’t really tied to rentals themselves they’re problems with code enforcement. They’re problems with lazy or unethical landlords ....
