TAIPEI, June 4 (Reuters) - Taiwan’s economy will grow at its fastest pace in more than a decade in 2021, the statistics office said on Friday, upgrading its outlook as a strong rebound in exports helps the island even as it deals with a spike in COVID-19 cases.
Gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to expand 5.46% this year, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said, up from a forecast made in February for 4.64% growth, which would be its fastest since 2010’s 10.25%.
The revision came as the statistics office more than doubled its export growth forecast for this year, with global demand for the island’s technology products buoyed by a work-from-home boom during the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

TAIPEI, May 20 (Reuters) - Taiwan’s April export orders rose for the 14th month in a row and far exceeded expectations, boosted by sustained demand for telecommuting products during strict lockdowns worldwide to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
Strong demand for smartphones made by the likes of Apple Inc also fuelled orders.
Taiwan’s export orders, a bellwether of global technology demand, jumped 42.6% from a year earlier to $54.93 billion in April, data from the Ministry of Economic Affairs showed on Thursday. ....

Taiwan community COVID-19 transmissions spread, 29 more cases

TAIPEI (Reuters) -Taiwan reported a record rise in domestic COVID-19 cases on Friday with 29 new cases and will close bars and nightclubs in the capital, Taipei, as community transmissions in part of city spread.

While Taiwan has reported just 1,291 cases, mostly imported from abroad, out of a population of some 24 million, a recent small rise in domestic infections has spooked residents and the stock market.
Health Minister Chen Shih-chung told a news conference that of the 29 new domestic infections many were connected with an outbreak in Taipei’s Wanhua district, a mix of old temples, trendy shops and hostess bars. ....
