Tickets To Colonial Downs Meet Go On Sale Monday

Live racing returns to Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent County, Va., in July, August and September with premium tickets going on sale Monday, March 15. General admission and parking are free. The best Thoroughbred horses and trainers from around the country will run every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for seven weeks from July 19 through Sept. 1. Post time each day will be 1:45 pm. Premium tickets and full racing schedule are available at www.colonialdowns.com.

England's first female registrar Beatrice Murray from Barrow has died aged 102

THE daughter of an ‘amazing’ and ‘intelligent’ woman has paid tribute to her mum, who was the first female superintendent registrar in England.
Beatrice Murray, from Barrow, passed away on January 12 at the age of 102, she leaves behind daughter Jill Byrne and granddaughter Sophie Ward.
“My mother was an amazing, elegant and intelligent lady,” said Ms Byrne.
“I was very proud to be her daughter as Sophie was to be her granddaughter.
“She will live on in our hearts forever.
“We have so many happy memories of our time spent together to treasure.”
Mrs Murray was born in Morecambe on January 5, 1919, and grew to become a dancer and aspiring actress, starting ballet at the age of three and appearing in numerous school productions. ....

Despite employing completely different methods to send horses on their way, starters across racing share the same objective: to make sure every horse receives a fair and safe getaway in order to protect the investments of their owners, the integrity of the sport, and the bettors interests.
Anthony Spike Ranno, the starter for Thoroughbred (flat) races at Colonial Downs in New Kent, starts the field from a stationary gate with 14 separate stalls, or chutes, that Thoroughbred horses enter one by one. After the final horse loads in, he presses a button that simultaneously rings the starting bell and flips open the magnetic doors. Horses then burst out together and compete in the race. ....
