The Lampedusa cross is made from pieces of a boat that was wrecked on 11 October 2013 near the Italian island of Lampedusa, close to the coast of Tunisia. The overcrowded boat carrying 466 migrants from Somalia and Eritrea caught fire, capsized and sank at a time when there was no official maritime rescue service. Three hundred eleven refugees fleeing persecution and seeking refuge in Europe were drowned. Inhabitants of Lampedusa helped to save the lives of 155 others.
The island’s carpenter, Francesco Tuccio, met some of the survivors at his church and, moved by their plight, made individual crosses for each person. Unable to make a difference to their situation, the best he felt he could do was to use his skills as a carpenter to fashion each a cross from the boat’s wreckage as a reflection on their salvation from the sea and hope for the future. These crosses also reflected the fate of many migrants. ....

Local credit union awards $5500 in classroom grants to Panhandle educators

After a month-long entry and review process, Community South Credit Union announced the educators who will be awarded a “Make-A-Splash!” Classroom Grant this year. The grant was developed to provide funding for unique projects that enhance the classroom experience beyond the normal curriculum. This year, the credit union awarded four grants for a total of $5,500 to winners in Holmes, Walton, and Washington Counties.
“We are thrilled to be able to support the efforts of these educators in providing our students with programs that might not otherwise be possible due to budget constraints,” said Jan Page, CEO of Community South. “We hope each of these initiatives will instill a thirst for lifelong learning.” ....

Will Rogers Elementary in Shawnee receives RAMP Designation

Will Rogers Elementary is one of 139 schools in 27 states, and one of only two in Oklahoma, to receive the Recognized American School Counselor Association s Model Program (RAMP) designation. Will Rogers will be honored during a special ceremony at ASCA s Annual Conference for making an exemplary commitment to their school counseling programs.
The RAMP designation, awarded for aligning with the criteria in the ASCA National Model, recognizes schools committed to delivering a data-informed school counseling program and an exemplary educational environment. Since the program’s inception, more than 1,100 schools have been designated as RAMP recipients.
“This year’s RAMP honorees have shown their commitment to students and the school counseling profession,” said Jill Cook, ASCA executive director. “These schools used data to drive their program development and implementation so all students can achieve success. RAMP designation distinguishes ....
