WHY are incinerators popping up everywhere? Is it because England desperately needs them? Is it because they provide clean energy? Is it because we can’t recycle enough? If, Denmark (previously leaders in energy-from-waste plants) announced in June that it wants to reduce incineration by 30%, the Welsh Government has declared a moratorium on new waste incinerators, and even our secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy, Kwasi Kwarteng, has refused planning development consent for a large energy-from-waste incinerator in Kemsley, Kent, then we begin to really wonder why on earth Portland should be forced to have one! ....
PORTLAND Town Council has voted to support the Government s National Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill. At their council meeting on January 20, Portland Town Councillors unanimously voted to support the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill currently awaiting a second reading in Parliament. The Bill, if passed, would require the Government to develop emergency strategies to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions, protect the environment, and support wildlife habitats and soil fertility. Having first declared a ‘Climate and Ecological Emergency’ in June 2019, Portland councillors also support Dorset Council’s own declaration, and have contributed comments and observations to Dorset Council s recent strategy consultation. ....
