Closed borders poses serious challenges for universities

Closed borders poses serious challenges for universities
Universities fear the nation’s borders will remain shut to foreign students until mid-2022, posing serious challenges to the institutions and their students.
The federal government imposed a ban on foreign students entering Australia at the onset of the worldwide corona virus outbreak which Australia has not been exposed to.
Universities say the decision to close the borders has slashed university incomes from student fees and cost the national economy an estimated A$40 billion a year, enough to support estimated 250,000 jobs pre-pandemic.
Catriona Jackson, chief executive of the national organisation Universities Australia, said a plan that would allow the safe return of international students was urgently needed. ....

University income from foreign student fees collapses

University income from foreign student fees collapses
Australia’s universities face a collapse in their income from foreign student fees, with AU$20 billion (US$15.5 billion) of the value of the international education sector expected to disappear by the end of 2022.
Higher education institutions are already facing financial upheaval as the flood of foreign students enrolling in Australian courses dries up.
A report released on Monday predicts that Australia’s continuing border closures that prevent foreign students enrolling will slash the value of Australia’s international education sector: collapsing from AU$40.3 billion in 2019 to AU$20.5 billion by the end of 2022.
The report, based on new modelling by Dr Peter Hurley from Victoria University’s Mitchell Institute in Melbourne, has uncovered the impact of a third academic year with no foreign students arriving in Australia. ....

Foreign student enrolments 210,000 lower than expected

Foreign student enrolments 210,000 lower than expected
Australia’s universities have enrolled 210,000 fewer international students this year than expected, with the loss of AU$1.8 billion (US$1.4 billion) in income. More than 17,000 jobs have already disappeared from campuses across the higher education sector.
To put the figure in context, according to government data, there were 442,000 international student enrolments in higher education in Australia in 2019, the latest figure available.
But Federal Education Minister Alan Tudge believes Australia’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout could pave the way to boost its intake of international students as early as the start of next year.
Tudge told a conference that Australia’s lucrative international student market could be given a much-needed boost by February 2022. ....

International lab to focus on interface of AI and humans
A new international research laboratory comprising French and Australian scientists has been launched and will focus on how humans interact and live with autonomous systems.
Organisers say this is an area of research at the interface of artificial intelligence, computer science, engineering, technology, human factors and psychology.
The full title of the ‘French Australian Laboratory for Humans-Autonomous Agents Teaming’ has been shortened to CROSSING.
The new laboratory, whose launch was announced on 22 February, is the result of collaboration between the French National Centre for Scientific Research or CNRS, three universities in South Australia and the French technological university IMT Atlantique. ....
