Tree group grafts hard to plant 1,000 saplings


HARD AT WORK: Tree planting in Teesdale has continued despite the difficulties from Covid-19
A TREE planting group has branched out and planted more than 1,000 saplings despite severe limitations caused by the Covid-19 lockdown.
Trees for Teesdale expanded last year to include a new group in Barningham to join those already formed in Barnard Castle, Cotherstone, Mickleton and Gainford.
The group’s chairman, Geoff King, said some 48 volunteers dedicated 314 hours of their time to the groups’ projects which included planting 12 trees in individual cages, 47 trees in fenced enclosures and 947 trees in open stock-free areas.
He added that the addition of 995 hedge whips had created 162 metres of a new hedge and wildlife corridor. ....

Bridging online, offline retailing


DUE to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdowns in 2020, retail businesses had to scramble to go online in order to regain sales and survive, while work-from-home workers adapted to shopping online.
Lazada Malaysia chief marketing officer Diana Boo noted that the online shopping platform saw a 300% increase in new sellers on-board last year, via its Pakej Kedai Pintar stimulus plan which aimed to assist local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to sell online.
“The overall digital economy has grown. We’re not the only e-commerce platform. There are many small businesses that have gone online. And even after the movement control order (MCO) was lifted, consumers continue to stay online, ” said Boo at the Smart Retail: Powering Nation’s Digital Economy two-day live virtual conference, held at end-March. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 Local supermarket chain Village Grocer announced today that it will no longer be providing plastic bags at all its stores in the Klang Valley and Johor with immediate effect.
It said it hopes to contribute to reducing single-use plastics and encourage its customers towards recycling and other sustainable measures. ....
