Leaps and Bounds Music Festival kicks off on Friday July 16.
No interstate travel? No worries. The 2021 Leaps and Bounds Music Festival program proves that Melbourne has more than enough talent and diversity to pack a ten-day festival full of live music, talks, markets and special events. After running the 2020 instalment virtually, this year’s LBMF will be a celebration of what makes the City of Yarra such a special live music ecosystem.
There are mini-festivals such as the soul, funk and hip hop extravaganza Fitzroyalty and label showcases from Bad Apples, The Push and Rockhopper Records. There are also intimate shows at The Tramway and The B.East, Sunday sessions at The Tote, late night parties at The Night Cat and even a First Nations trivia night. ....

Chasing Ghosts' Jimmy Kyle on ensuring Indigenious voices are at the table

On Chasing Ghosts‘ new EP, ‘Homelands’ (out this Friday) the goal is truth-telling, of sharing the real stories of people not with the platform to speak. In a true punk rock fashion, it’s to lift up other voices. For its two singles, ‘Summer‘ and ‘Busted Lung,’ the six-piece addressed Indigenous rights and white supremacy, and then forgiveness by a victim of an LGBT hate crime respectively. With this EP – Chasing Ghosts first new lot of music in five years, since the stellar ‘I Am Jimmy Kyle’ LP – frontman, lyricist and bandleader Jimmy Kyle is talking openly about a great many topics. So for this lengthy but insightful interview, he discusses with me Indigenous sovereignty, more of the story behind ‘Busted Lung,’ dangerous whataboutisms, and exactly what music and mainstream media can do to better communicate Inidigenious related issues.  ....

DATE
Summer is the first track from a forthcoming EP titled Homelands by Aboriginal led punk-rock band Chasing Ghosts. Frontman Jimmy Kyle is a proud Koori man, a descendent of the Thungutti mob from the mid-north coast of NSW. He speaks and writes with a potent mind.
Every track on the forthcoming EP is about real people and real situations, all of them born from intense real-life stories. Wanting to do justice to the topics while bringing everyone on the journey and simultaneously still speaking the truth was a pressure that weighted heavy.
“I was scared to write these songs, because a lot of the topics are challenging,” says Jimmy Kyle. “But that’s how I knew I was onto something. It made me feel nervous.” ....

Julia Stone, Middle Kids, Tash Sultana: Australia's best new music for February

Julia Stone featuring Matt Berninger – We All Have
For fans of: Damian Rice, the National, Taylor Swift gone folk
Julia Stone’s first solo album in eight years has been recorded piecemeal since 2015 with various collaborators, including St Vincent. As a result, the four singles we have heard so far all sound wildly different, with an ethereal production wash being the only binding element. We All Have is the most beautiful to date, a sparse ballad with minimal piano and finger-picked guitar accompanying Stone’s chirping baby-bird harmonies. Matt Berninger from the National takes verse two, his solemn baritone the perfect counter, before the pair combine for the chorus. It’s all over and done in two and a half minutes but it leaves a lasting, calming impression – a lovely ode to the impermanence of everything. ....
