Two defeated Republicans, Grant County Commission District 5 candidate Tom Shelley and District 28 state Senate candidate James “Jimbo” Williams, filed a motion in District Court last week to impound Grant County’s general election ballots.
“It’s just a right, and both of our races were close,” Shelley told the Daily Press on Saturday. “It’s very expensive to pay the county clerk to do a recount but we are just going to do a little audit, and this way is less expensive.”
Williams also filed a petition to impound ballots in Socorro County, which were also taken into custody by New Mexico State Police last week. While the court order to impound the ballots in Grant County did not include terms for the inspection of the ballots, the ....

Jack Brennan was at home in Indian Hills when he heard a knock on the glass of his front door last Wednesday morning. He said that two men in a black pickup who did not identify themselves inquired about his 94-year-old mother-in-law, who lives with Brennan.  The men spoke to him about general election ballots that were impounded at the request of Republican candidates James ※Jimbo” Williams and Tom Shelley who each lost his race for state Senate and the Grant County Commission’s District 5, respectively. Although they petitioned the court to gain access to the ballots, both Shelley and Williams told the Daily Press that they have no association with the individuals reportedly showing up unannounced at the homes of elderly voters in the county.  ※The guy in front with a mask on looked at a sheet [of paper on a clipboard] and he said something like, ‘I’m here about Dorothy Booth,’” Brennan said. He replied, ※We ....

With Catron County declining to nominate a candidate, New Mexico’s District 28 Senate seat will remain vacant until Democratic Sen.-elect Siah Correa Hemphill is sworn in next month.  Correa Hemphill won the Senate seat against Catron County Republican James ※Jimbo” Williams in the Nov. 3 general election. Democrat Gabriel Ramos, whom Correa Hemphill beat in the June primary, resigned his position as District 28 senator effective Dec. 6, in order to take a job with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.  Catron County’s decision not to nominate a candidate for the position leaves Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham unable to appoint anyone to the seat, said Lt. Gov. Howie Morales, who was himself appointed to the District 28 Senate seat by Gov. Bill Richardson in 2008, following the sudden death of longtime Sen. Ben Altamirano. Morales was serving as Grant County clerk at the time of his appointment, w ....
