Florida legislators boost arts and culture funding by 24 percent


Hard-hit arts and cultural organizations in Florida that faced drastic losses of revenues after closing their doors for long periods due to the coronavirus pandemic, are getting a boost in funding assistance from the state Legislature.
The 2021-22 budget plan agreed to by the Florida House and Senate and sent to Gov. Ron DeSantis includes $26.7 million in two of the four budget categories that provide allocations for arts and cultural organizations and individual artists. That marks a 24 percent boost over 2020, when the Legislature approved $20.2 million in three categories. In 2019, the state provided $21.2 million in grants.
The largest portion, $23.2 million, is allocated for Cultural and Museum Grants category, which provides operational funding to 517 nonprofit organizations across the state. That represents a $9.6 million increase from last year. ....

Although the city rejected the Arts and Cultural Alliance’s proposed partnership, the nonprofit still intends to bring affordable live-work space to the North Trail.
If the yearslong effort to create an affordable artist-housing project in Sarasota is going to become a reality, it won’t be with significant financial support from the city.
On Monday, the commission voted 3-2 to reject a request to partner with the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County on construction of live-work space for artists at 4644 N. Tamiami Trail. The Arts Alliance is negotiating with Sarasota County to use the site, which county officials are trying to sell to aid the development of affordable housing. ....

TALLAHASSEE, FL State tax money earmarked to promote and market tourism in Florida would be diverted, in part, to other uses under a proposal that has drawn strong opposition from the tourism industry, which argues it has taken the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association has forwarded a letter to members of the Florida Senate Committee on Community Affairs strongly opposing Senate Bill 2008, which would expand the approved uses of Florida s Tourist Development Taxes and Convention Development Taxes. ....

Facing Forward, a collaboration by Inuit artist Pierre Aupilardjuk and Toronto-based artist Shary Boyle, looks like an artifact from another planet. Boyle s contribution a porcelain, human-like figure wearing a colourful herringbone-pattern dress is seated, elbows resting on its knees, holding up its three heads.
