'Perfect storm' sank Laurentian: Board

Article content
Former members of the Laurentian board of governors say a series of unpredictable events created a “perfect storm” that drove the university deeper into debt.
In a letter sent to Shelley Tapp, deputy minister of colleges and universities, the members point to the 2017 withdrawal of Saudi students over a foreign policy dispute as the first unforeseen setback.

Each of these 137 students, they note, paid up to $36,000 in tuition.
Two years later, the province cut domestic tuition, freezing it in 2020.
“Instead of domestic tuition going up by, say, six per cent over the last two years as would normally occur, it went down by 10 per cent,” the letter states. “That’s a gap of 16 per cent in only two years.” ....

Minister's words little comfort to Sudbury's midwifery students

Article content
Vague assurances from the province that midwifery education in Northern Ontario will be revived are not doing much to comfort those dealing with the immediate impact of the program loss at Laurentian University.
Ross Romano, the minister of Colleges and Universities, said last week the “government’s priority is to maintain a Northern and bilingual midwifery program option,” but did not specify where this would take shape or how soon it might occur.

Financial contributions from local wilderness lovers were key to setting aside a huge, mountainous tract near Willisville and Whitefish Falls as conservation land.
“One of the tremendous positives out of this has been the people,” said Ted Cowan, treasurer with the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy, which finalized its acquisition of the 1,984-acre property last week.
