JANESVILLE After delays, changes in leadership, the pandemic and a complete redesign, the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin was ready to break ground on its long-awaited new building this month. Then a new problem slammed the brakes on the project: a national steel shortage. Jim McMullen, the humane societyâs executive director, said the kind of steel roof trusses needed for the building normally would have been delivered in three to four weeks, but when Corporate Contractors Inc. ordered the steel, they were told the delivery wouldnât come until January. The problem was a major U.S. business had preordered massive amounts of the trusses this year, McMullen said. ....
May 6, 2021 The Southern Wisconsin Humane Society’s new facility will be smaller than originally planned and the groundbreaking has also been pushed back. Humane Society Executive Director Jim McMullen says staff recently helped with a redesign to “right size” the facility to be more efficient. McMullen says the original designed called for 26-thousand square feet. The new design is about 16-thousand. The groundbreaking will also be later than originally planned. McMullen says delays in the material supply chain have pushed back those plans to late June or early July. ....

Yes, that stinks on many levels. Writing about food for a living with tone-deaf tastebuds is both ironic and weird. It reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode, “Time Enough at Last,” where the actor Burgess Meredith plays a character who loves books. And when he’s finally able to consume them voraciously, so to speak, his glasses break and he becomes blinded as a result. ....
