Along the Central Coast, California s scenic Highway 1 is closed 20 miles south of Big Sur after a section of the roadway collapsed when the cliffside below gave way amid torrential rain.
Photos of the highway show a huge piece of the road missing, with both the north and southbound lanes washed away.
Caltrans spokesperson Jim Shivers said the damage to the highway is called a slip out. It s where we lose a part of the highway and now we re facing a project to clean and repair that stretch, Shivers said. This is the only location we re aware of where this happened in the storm. Our maintenance team is patrolling the highway now to look for other damage. ....

Northbound HWY 101 reopens at Mariposa Reina after brief closure
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Highway 101 at Mariposa Rein reopened late Thursday morning after Caltrans closed the northbound lanes due to flooding in the roadway.
When the roadway was closed, Caltrans spokesman Jim Shivers said there was no clear timeline for when it would reopen. At around 11:20 a.m., Shivers said traffic was flowing once again.
Highway workers and emergency personnel were in the area and drivers were told to take extra caution when traveling.
The southbound lanes were open throughout the closure.
Heavy rains throughout the week have caused flooding and mud flow throughout our area. ....

Milwaukee was recently ranked the third-worst city in the U.S. to be a dog in an Honest Paws study. The survey looked at nine factors, including the number of dog parks, hiking trails and pet-friendly businesses. The study initially called Milwaukee the worst city in the U.S. for dogs, but updated its data, moving Milwaukee up in the ranks. ....

Winter's first storm causes chaos on Central Coast roadways

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - The pounding rain that swept through Santa Barbara County Sunday night and through most of Monday left behind debris and soaked roads, sending California Highway Patrol officers scrambling.
“We’ve had some spinouts. A lot of standing water on the roadway in certain places,” said Santa Barbara CHP officer Shannan Sams.
One of those spinouts happened near Vandenberg Air Force base in a steady afternoon rain. The single-car crash sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries.
“Caltrans was able to excavate a ditch near the highway which allowed the water to flow back to Romero Creek,” said Jim Shivers of Caltrans District 5. “Once that job was completed, we were able to open up the number two lane.” ....

UPDATE (4:13 p.m.) - Caltrans says the #2 northbound Highway 101 lane is expected to reopen at 6 p.m. following emergency guardrail repair work.
