Judith Roderick takes silk and transforms it into the high desert

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... ....
The expansive sky, the sudden storms and the looming New Mexico mountains tumble into landscapes across Judith Roderick’s silk canvas.
“That was a piece of white silk when I started,” the artist said, of a composition hanging in her Placitas home studio. “That’s often how I do things. I love that blank canvas.”
“Cloudburst” by Judith Roderick, 35 x 27 inches.
Roderick has been depicting her high desert surroundings in fiber since 1982, when she was one of the original owners of the Albuquerque yarn store Village Wools.
She followed a trajectory from oils, watercolors, acrylics and lithography before she discovered the vibrant palette of silk dyes. ....

UNM commit Robbins credits a former Lobo — and not just the obvious one » Albuquerque Journal

Hannah’s roots with the Lobos don’t stop there.
As a middle schooler, Hannah did individual training sessions with former Clovis High and UNM women’s star Antiesha Brown, whom she credits for helping to expand her basketball skill set.
“I went to a lot of UNM games and Antiesha Brown was my favorite player,” Hannah Robbins said in a phone interview. “I admired her game and I learned a lot from her. We worked on shooting and she taught me the Euro-step, which is something I use a lot.”
Brown, who played professionally in Europe after graduating from UNM in 2015, laughed when told of the glowing review. A 1,000-point scorer in college, Brown now works in real estate sales in Albuquerque. ....

Stronger than the pandemic: Few, if any, NM startups failed in latest downturn

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Long-time angel investor and serial entrepreneur John Chavez had an unenviable front-row seat during the economic devastation wrought by the Great Recession in 2008.
John Chavez
At that time, New Mexico’s incipient startup ecosystem had limited resources to support many struggling businesses that had recently launched prior to the crisis, and investors like Chavez could do little as numerous startups crashed and burned in the downturn.
Now, 13 years later, it’s a very different story as the state and country emerge from the pandemic, which plunged the economy into a far-worse crisis than the one a decade ago. This time, the local ecosystem was well-prepared to weather the storm, armed with a ....

Harrison: With Bregman's baggage, his return here would be like Manny 2009

Nothing as of this writing is set in stone, but let’s presume it happens.
In one sense, terrific. The consummate overachiever with a World Series ring, an All-Star Game MVP trophy and a chip on his shoulder to match his cockiness and inexhaustible drive. A guy with a big heart, a philanthropist, who obviously adores his parents. Coming back to a stadium “in which he literally grew up,” says Isotopes general manager John Traub. Alex’s father Sam occupied a suite at Isotopes games for years and, as noted below, remains an advertiser in the ballpark.
“One of us,” New Mexicans can say of Alex. ....

Yodice on preps: Post-pandemic seasons packed unforgettable moments

Saturday, April 10, as much as any day, defined the staggering weirdness of the spring 2021 prep sports semester in New Mexico.
On the same day, the state was staging fall sports in the form of state soccer finals, winter sports in the form of basketball, and the start of spring sports. That kind of confluence had never before occurred.
Or, maybe it was April 1 that underlined this point with more clarity, with prep football played inside University Stadium, part of a five-games-in-three days “bowl game” experiment by the New Mexico Activities Association in lieu of an actual football postseason. ....
